Oooof. Our “one and only” has just graduated HS, is off to face college and I can only describe it as simultaneously grieving and rejoicing. I will need MANY self-effacing, reflecting human/celebrities to fill my days and nights after we leave her in another state in August. NO ONE is lying when they say it goes so fast. Simply savor it all : the messy loud parts and the quiet parts.

The audio version of Surrender was near perfect. I cried. I laughed. I ugly cried. I sang.

This hit on multiple levels. My kid is off on a school trip to Europe right now. It is both terrifying to have her on the other side of the planet and exciting that she is spreading her wings and learning to function without us. Also, I loved the Bono memoir. It's LONG, but I loved the stories, wisdom and music sprinkled throughout.

I love this post! As as a mom of a 26 and 24 year old, thinking about them leaving the nest when they were young was overwhelming and so sad! I think that's because when they were younger, their place is at home with you. When they become older teens, something begins to shift in both the parent and the child. They are starting to become restless in their hormonal bodies and we feel like we are back to parenting toddlers! (No really, thats a real thing. regarding their brain development during adolescence, they revert back in ways to toddler thinking, the frontal cortex thinking is harder to find.). "The Teenage Brain, A Neuroscientists Survival Guide to raising Adolescent"s by Frances E Jensen is a must read!

My oldest, my incredible daughter who was the easiest, most delightful child, became someone foreign to me, and frankly unlikable during her senior year of high school. To say that i was ready for her to leave for college in a different state was not an exaggeration.

She is now a 26 year old, completely lovely human being again, and I love every second that I get to spend with her. I think that's how God works, he makes our heart a bit more ready for our little birdies to fly!

That makes me a lot of sense to me. My oldest will be a senior and I have noticed his interest in interacting with the rest of us waning. It makes me a little sad that I don’t really remember what it used to be like but I am looking forward to whatever the next stage in our relationship will be.

Bono's memoir was so life-giving to me! I loved it in both written and spoken form and highly recommend it.
