Circe is one of my favorite books, but when I try to read other interpretations--even by THE SAME AUTHOR--I can't get through them or they just fall short. (Looking at you Phaedra and Song of Achilles.)
I liked Hadestown for many reasons that didn't necessarily have to do with the plot.
Thanks for this round-up. Taking a tour of the region was really helpful as I'd been feeling some diffuse anxiety about the amount going on in the region.
Sarah, if you want to read Huck Finn and James simultaneously, I'm game. I just finished James and thought it was absolute genius. I haven't read Huck Finn for a few decades and so I kind of wish I could remember more of it before I'd started James. They're short, so Sarah will be done in about 48 hours. It will take me 2 months.
I tried to read Huck Finn after reading James and I just could not. James was so well written and well Huck Finn was from the point of view from a kid.
Sarah, I just came to say that I too share the unpopular opinion that Hadestown ain't all that. When I saw it my friends were in awe and loooooved it. I was like, "Meh." It didn't move me at all. I can't get all worked up for a dumb boy who was too impatient to follow directions.
I just saw Hadestown for the first time (a nephew performing the Orpheus role) and him turning around just bugged me sooo bad. But the song about why we build the wall and resonance with current day politics really captured me!
Thank you for this episode, Sarah and Carrie. It’s hard for me to understand the headlines in this part of the world, and you’ve given some good context to help with that.
Kerry Anderson is always a treat. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Immediately adds Careless People to TBR

I watched the Tony's performance and some other live clips, and I listen to the album, but I have never listened to or watched the last couple songs.
THIS!! Preach my sisters!! It was totally meh!

I hate to only talk about the Outside Politics on an episode like this, but after today’s news I don’t even know what to say about anything.
I love books, and I enjoyed Circe. But I came here to plug one of the author’s other books. I thought The Song of Achilles was just gorgeous.
Heartbreaking news this morning related to this episode 💔
Wish I could put a sad emoji on this comment. I swear, I wish I was more uninformed sometimes. My heart would be lighter due to ignorance.
