That Lays ad 🥹

I was literally covering my eyes and screaming at that manscaping commercial with the singing piles of pubes "WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA!!!". I watched a bowel disempaction on The Pitt after and was less disgusted 🤣🤣🤣

As a Journalism major and recovering former media employee...my grief over the decimation of our news industry is never ending.

I am here for your moderated voices railing against the elites. I’m one of the long time listeners who has felt degrees of discomfort and frustration with some of the podcast over the past year(s). But I’ve stuck around and am finding so much richness in that.

Now, you are more clearly than ever sounding alarms, and I think you’re right that people are noticing.

I’m currently reading ‘Caliban and the Witch’ by Silvia Federici… and honestly wishing I was doing so as part of a collective PP slow read, because it’s freaking dense. But I so badly want to understand capitalism and how we got here, so I am committed.

The book covers the history of the 1300s-1500s in Europe, in the transition from feudalism to capitalism. It tells the stories of the MANY, MANY peasant and proletariat revolts who tried, tirelessly, for hundreds of years, to democratize power—to seize control over their lives from clergy and nobility (the ‘elites’).

My main takeaways so far are:

- this fight against the elites is nothing new

- history is full of examples of ‘what to do’ to resist in small and big ways

- workers lost this fight ultimately, and we are still under the rule of the powerful few

- we have to figure out how to win this time

Hey Potential Spice Cabinet Attendees - In case you are on the fence - I just looked at the website, and I stayed in this hotel in 2018, although it was under a different name then. The location is great with easy access to lots of sites via walking or public transit. I know breakfasts are included with the ticket, but if you are staying extra days, Hen House Eatery around the corner has great breakfasts. There used to be a fabulous coffee shop in the Skyway directly above the hotel. It has since closed, but maybe something else wonderful has taken its place.

And now I am curious - how the heck were you able to book an entire hotel downtown in August? (No need to answer. I am just in awe of everyone's skills.)

America the Beautiful was written by an alumna of my alma mater. When sung on campus, the lyric is always "and crown thy good with sisterhood," so we were taken aback when Brandi Carlile sang "brotherhood." There were at least a few obnoxious people at bars around the country who screamed out "sisterhood" at that line. I apologize for them.

I've mentioned this in the Facebook group a couple of times: For a couple of months I have been reading Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States with a friend. What's fun is this episode and one from last week, it's like Howard Zinn's ghost is speaking through the both of you. He would tell you the billionaire class never lived up to its expectations.

BTW, I will add my voice to the many that told you to read Project Hail Mary. I'm reading People's History because for years people told me to read it, but IMO there are better history books covering the same material.

I just have to randomly point out that Brandi Carlile had two string players with her—SistaStrings, who went to my church growing up!!! I SCREAMED so loud when I saw them. Small world 💙

Terri Nestel's avatar

They are fantastic. If you know to look for them, they are all over the Americana/folk music scene.

Emily Zinda's avatar

Yes!! They were at the Grammy’s with her last year too. Haven’t seen either of them in at least 20 years but it brings me such joy to see them doing what they’ve always loved with such success!

SD's avatar

That is super cool! I might have liked them the best of all the musicians performing that day.

Well.

The Obama post really made me rage. The overt racism, sure...but the underlying racism that says a Black president who is upstanding in every way can be mocked by the worst example of a world "leader" ever and people are OKAY with it...RAGE.

I, too, am shell shocked about the Washington Post firings. What a shit move. And when you said, Sarah, that it can't all be op-ed...NO ONE KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE. RAGE. (since the early 90s in that regard) It's like flicking a gnat. That's what an obscenely wealthy man (because they're almost all men) is like making decisions that affect countless people just because he can.

I've tried several times to dip into the Epstein files, just to understand the context of things for myself. (Because being in the files doesn't mean you're IN the files.) But the last thing I read made me so sick, I still get nauseated every time I think about it. And of course I can't stop thinking about it.

I didn't watch the football game, but I have to say...I'm glad I missed the commercials after hearing this conversation. lol They sound pretty terrible. I thoroughly enjoyed the halftime show. It was great fun to see all the things represented in the show that I see in my own neighborhood. ¡Wepa!

Kate F's avatar

"Shit move", indeed.

Also, I only watched the halftime show (I went back to watch Brandi because I had know idea she performed and I ❤️ her) - I have zero regrets. That was hands-down the best half-time show I've seen a long, long time and exactly what we needed at this moment.

SD's avatar

I hated that post because it was racist, but, possibly even more so, because it is so stupid and juvenile. I am like Beth - I don't even know what to say about this.

Norma Stary's avatar

Almost forgot to shout out Brandi <let's go lesbians> and I personally thought that logo looked a little.......... gay

Jodi W's avatar

Sarah and Beth, you left out one spectacular Super Bowl pre-game performance from Coco Jones crushing "Lift every voice and sing" and the throwback nod to Whitney with her (and the orchestra) outfit! It makes me sad that the NFL keeps pushing this performance earlier and earlier and will not give a time , in advanc, for when it will be aired, so its easy to miss.

Sara Duran's avatar

I will listen to Lift every voice and sing over the star spangled banner any day of the week.

Linsey's avatar

She was so good and that outfit was perfect 🤩

I wish I could find the article where I read this but I absolutely cannot stop thinking about something I read about the Besos wedding last summer. It said something to the effect that as a percentage of his wealth, the wedding would have cost someone with a median income something like $36. Full stop. That is all I need to hear about these billionaires. That shifted my thinking in so many ways and I think about it at least once a week

Melissa Urbina's avatar

OH MY GOSH, SARAH!! I have a bone to pick with you!

I don't even care if you see "the Ryan Gosling Movie" or not, but PROJECT HAIL MARY jumped to the #2 of my standalone favorite book list (first place is Pride and Prejudice, for reference) and I'm literally hosting a book club on it tomorrow with ladies who are NOT sci-fi gals and everyone has been commenting in the group chat how much they loved it. I DARE you to read it and not love it. Better yet LISTEN to it, cuz the author is amazing and there are some really beautiful audio elements that you won't get by reading.

Best summarized by a TikTok review where a man holding the book just ugly cried for a full minute while holding the book saying "It's so beautiful ... Just read it".

Morgan's avatar

Looooved it!

I loved that book and also skipped the science stuff that was way over my head.

Hi! 👋

Here to defend my ad creators! I work at an ad agency. Let me just tell you. There are so few of those ads that in anyway reflect what was pitched originally. First- I guarantee you that 60% of those briefs from the client said: "This is a super bowl ad! Include a celebrity!" And if it didn't, it's a shortcut to getting the client to buy your idea. They get it if it's a celeb.

Second, I actually have some really great clients but even they have to make some tweak or make some change because if they don't, why are they there? Example, I just sat with a team who went through two rounds with a client where they cried every time they heard the pitch, dragged their boss in to see it "because it's exactly what we need" and came back a week later with 10 bullets of changes to make "because I like it but i need to get everyone on board."

A Super Bowl spot costs $7mm+ to buy and $2mm+ to shoot. You will rarely see something interesting anymore. Too much damn money and therefore too many opinions to water it down.

This is soooooooo interesting and true. My (Maggie) favorite ad was the Pepsi one because they took a risk with the polar bears and the Coldplay cam thing. It was fun, relevant, and (for Pepsi) on brand. But I can imagine a universe where I would think "this is a $7 million ad, you want me to just TRUST the ad agency with my brand?!?!?!" (Yes. Yes, I do.)

Janine F's avatar

So glad you all mentioned Brandi Carlile’s performance! On my way to see her this evening in Philly!

Janine F's avatar

She was amazing! Hope you have as good a time as we did!

Mary's avatar

I hope you had the best time! My best friend and I are going to see her in Chicago in just over a week!

What is disheartening about the situation we find ourselves in is that this administration is without honor. They are not going to suddenly become honorable. I'd like to be hopeful but it is hard.

In terms of the visual impact, I loved watching the halftime show. It did look like a Broadway set. The flags and shouting the names of the countries was very cool. The wedding was awesome (especially finding out it was a real wedding!) I could do with less (NO!) crotch grabbing and I prefer songs with words I can understand while I’m listening. Nevertheless, it was one of my favorite halftime shows of recent years!

Katrina McLaughlin's avatar

My touch points on social media definitely did not all pass the vibe check when it came to the halftime show. 😬

My husband was very disappointed by the Levi's commercial because it started off with Woody from Toy Story, and he thought it was going to be a trailer for Toy Story 5. And then it wasn't.

Jennifer Massett's avatar

My friends and family didn't either. Sometimes when they say these thing that 'nobody wants this' and 'I don't know anyone that supported this' and 'I didn't see anywhere in my social media that anyone supported this' I feel very lost. Because I do not feel/see the âme things. 4-5 million people tuned into the TPUSA show and at least that many have viewed it after the fact. So it's not no one.

SD's avatar

The NFL wanted it. Because they are trying to court more young and Latino fans. It just so happened that lots of other people enjoyed it too.
