the feeling of not belonging to any culture at all was with me most of my young life, and probably didn't really change until i lived abroad. i am white and was raised by a middle class family in the suburbs. my parents were transplants to where we lived, and family was across the country. even their parents were transplanted away from their families. my only from-ness is the suburbs of Cleveland, OH, where my family roots are shallow, and for a lot of my life, that felt like the soul equivalent of being dry toast. that feeling of having no culture isn't something i could have exactly put my finger on, until i heard it come out of someone else's mouth after 35 years of living. i know there is a lot more to take from this episode, and i did, but that struck a very deep chord. thank you for articulating that.
This series was exactly what my heart needed leading up to this 4th of July. While my dear sister is hanging her flag upside down today and refusing to celebrate, my husband and I will be leading our neighborhood bike parade as we have done for the past 12 years (except in 2020 duh). Listening to all the thoughts about citizenship over the past 30 days has given me strength to eat hot dogs alongside my neighbor who flew a TAKE AMERICA BACK flag during the election, and really appreciate all the deep conversations I get to have with neighbors who walked in the No Kings Protests. We are community of 220 homes filled with diverse personalities and a shared love of where we live. Thank you to the Pantsuit Politics Team for helping me be a good and loving citizen!!!
Do you live in my neighborhood?! Unlikely but we also have a neighborhood parade…where while our slice of town leans heavily to the left I still saw a “Gulf of America” T-shirt and another with Donald Trump dressed as Uncle Sam. And then, I sat at the post parade potluck and lamented with the kindest folks I just met about the state of affairs in this country but CHOOSING joy on this day nevertheless. As I watched fireworks with family and neighbors tonight, I credit this series for a moment of gratitude as I absorbed the true beauty of citizenship on display around me. It was a wonderful day.
Loved this series and how it helped keep me grounded about the state of things. I appreciate the care you all bring to this topic. Best Holiday Available to everyone! I started the day drinking coffee on my back porch out of my best day available PP mug!
I know lots of people have teared up during this series but it took me until today when Sarah said: “Some of my favorite reflections are less about our relationship to the government as citizens and more about our relationship to each other.”
Happy Independence Day!! 🇺🇲🎆What I missed most about America when we lived in Spain was diversity. The beautiful mix of cultures here really adds to the feeling of expansiveness... all that variety to experience.
I'll be hanging at the beach with family I haven't seen in years and then chilling with them on my deck with some BBQ and local beer.
Thank you for these!!!

This series might be my favorite thing y’all have done - thank you! I know I will continue to return to these mediations throughout the year
