I don’t love the nickname Big Gretch, because the double g makes it kinda sound like “big wretch,” which sounds like a description of vomiting or something. But that’s probably just me.🤣 All the redistricting fighting I find to be the grossest, most purely partisan power grabbing fest of yuck from both sides ever. It’s just bad behavior to match bad behavior that yucks me out, not that I have some perfect solution once the ball got rolling on it, but I just really hate it from every angle. It does seem like if there is something AI is perhaps suited to, it would be creating the most efficient (geographically compact) legislative districts with much less partisan bias than the current methods do.
Although I also feel like Michigan nice can be a little passive aggressive and everyone might also have been expressing their own complaints about the weather. Because we love to do that, too.
Re Whitmer’s comments about data centers: I live near two towns where there are talks to build data centers, and nobody I know is happy about it. One of the towns voted not to allow the data center but then the developer (funded by a billionaire) sued the town and now the project is moving forward. There’s also a lot of opacity around what costs will be punted to residents, and the developers are trying to circumvent processes that would bring some transparency to the situation. I think Whitmer has been a good governor but I found her answers about this to be unconvincing.
I don't feel great about these data centers either. I can hope that the one she specifically references will be responsible in its operations and impact, but I'm suspicious that opening the door to one will lead to others coming that don't embrace the guardrails. Especially considering how much water is needed to cool these buildings and the close proximity to our beloved Great Lakes.
My home state! And I'm moving back in a few months! Love the leadership, professionalism, and true love of Michigan that exudes from Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Go Lions! and (sorry Sparty) Go Blue!
Proud to be a Michigander and proud of this woman's leadership! The bravest thing about this video is that she still has the Spartan football helmet on display next to the Lions. 😂 (And I say that as a Sparty fan! #GoGreen #ThankGoodness4BasketballSeason)
Again voicing my support for competent people doing the hard work. 🙌🏻 She’s great! I did notice she kinda sidestepped any mention of Mamdani. I think that’s fine and makes sense for her and Michigan as they currently are. But I don’t want to see that turn into rejection of ideas - either from within the party or from outside.
Big Grech is amazing! I’m so glad she mentioned the Etsy boom of ‘That Woman’ merch, the Witches Hat brewery in my hometown of South Lyon, MI has an excellent beer called ‘That Woman’ and I love this for her
Heads up this episode is not in my PocketCast feed. Very odd ..
Saying hi to all of my fellow Michiganders! 👋

But, like, we do feel bad when the weather is crappy. How are we not supposed to apologize when the weather acts all embarrassing?

Yeah. It would be great if the things she said were true but I don't know if I believe it.

What a delightful interview! This is a great way to end the week. Thank you PP team for making these amazing interviews happen
High-five from the Mitten! 🧤

I noticed that, too. But it does make total sense to me 🤷🏼♀️
