Really good episode. The small non-profit I work in got DOGEd two weeks ago - 3/4 of our funding was just gone overnight. At the end of the episode, when Emily talked about pivoting and being persistent and believing they can do it... I just wanted to reach through my phone and give her hug. I think she's right, and it is so unbelievably exhausting/demoralizing/all-consuming, all the more so because it's an entirely manufactured crisis.
Such a great conversation and I learned so much! I wonder if a reason the average consumer is fooled into thinking prices for things might go back down is because one of our most frequent purchases - gasoline - does fluctuate. Obviously it hasn’t ever gone way down to prices when we were kids ($1.19/gallon!) but they do fluctuate enough to create the illusion of prices going down. 🤷♀️
I'm curious how the announced reduction in tariffs with China impacts decision making now? I am sure that it adds complexity and more uncertainty into the decision making process since we have no idea how long they will last and they could change again at any moment.
This conversation was so insightful and also feels so scary. I don’t understand why everyone isn’t talking about the tariffs and their impact all the time!! What Emily shared matches what I just heard from a friend who works in bicycle manufacturing and sales, as well as a friend who works in clothing retail. He said get ready for out of stock and then high prices.
Emily, I've loved your products from the beginning!
I own a web development agency and we are starting to see some of the things Emily talked about as a service provider. I lost a client I've worked with for 10 years last week because of the tariffs. They can't sell one of their main products anymore and are having to cut expenses to try to survive this year.
This was the year we were going to grow as well. We haddone a lot of work last year to start bringing in new clients and expand into a new market. Now, I'm just hoping we can bring in enough work to pay my people. I'm also hearing this from my friends who own agencies. Everyone is talking about cash flow and how to manage it because work just isn't coming in like normal.
Emily. I’ve followed you for years, since a long-ago podcast episode with Jen Hatmaker. You gave me permission to stop separating my darks and lights and just use a Shout color sheet instead, and made my desk prettier. :) Thank you for using your voice and speaking out now on tariffs. Your courage is helping.
This was a great conversation, and I learned a lot. I have been using a Simplifed planner for a few years, so thanks for an awesome product, Emily. I am holding hope that you will find a solution that works for your small business! Now, it turns out I still have some work to do in using my digital/paper calendars because I just realized I didn’t order a graduation gift at the right time. I am wondering if there is an organization system that will send a full grown adult to my home to help me get it together 😂😂
I've been a Simplified user for years and I keep a constant stock of their products for last minute gifts. I've been following along and have used many of Emily's posts to illustrate how tariffs are hurting real people. Keep fighting Emily!
I have lights that come on at certain times...because as a woman who lives alone I don't want to come home at night to a dark apartment, but that's the closest thing I have to anything smart. I don't do any voice-operated anything.
I loved how human this conversation was, both on Emily's end and also on the Chinese company reps end. I lived in China, and I loved how Emily shared the human touches that reflect the love and care I experienced.
Great episode! Wish my hand writing wasn’t so atrocious. I want to be a paper planner girlie but 25+ years at a keyboard ruined my ability to hand write legibly
I am so grateful you had this conversation! One of my favorite local boutiques (Paper Luxe in Tacoma, WA) is sharing frequently on their social media about the impacts these tariffs are going to have and the very real ramifications it will have on not only them as a business and their employees but also us as the customer. Paper Luxe’s owner has been sharing the last few years about the political advocacy she’s done on behalf of small businesses and I’m so grateful for people like her and for those like Emily who are speaking out and fighting back!
This lovely conversation made it much more real to me how these tariffs are hurting American businesses. I had mostly been thinking about the effects of higher prices on consumers, so this episode helped broaden my understanding.

This was a really amazing episode. I just felt so seen as a working mom, woman in the world.

I loved this episode! Thank you for sharing how these tariffs are hurting a small, woman-owned and led business.

Thank you for this conversation! I have been using Emily's planners for 6 years and I love them.
