The morning after Trump was elected in 2016, this quote from Harry Potter stuck with me and has ever since: What’s coming will come, and we’ll meet it when it does. I really admire Sarah’s belief that good people speaking up can change history. I absolutely agree. And I’m comforted by the fact that whatever happens, we will face it. We did in 2016, and we will again and again. The results might be catastrophic, but I trust this community in particular to keep facing forward and looking at the hard truths.

A beautiful expression of your passion but there are those of us who disagree with your opinions of President Trump. We on the right have lived through 8 years of Obama and 4 years of Biden with 4 from DJT sammiched in between and let’s be honest, it wasn’t all as bad as the left would want everyone to believe. Trump did not threaten Democracy any more than Obama or Biden with their policies, so the left will survive another 4 years of DJT. A storm is coming and things will be better as a result and remember in the end we are a constitutional republic and the right can’t stop what coming no matter who they run for President. God has chosen DJT to equalize and neutralize the actions of the radical left . Nothing will change that and nothing will stop it but it’s for the best. Good luck with that knee, I can relate with 2 total replacements which I highly recommend.

I am in the thick of preparing to teach AP Language for the first time and after the first paragraph I was like, “This is a rhetorical masterpiece!” Stunning writing.

Thank you for this thoughtful piece of writing.

I would hug you right back. That was an absolutely marvelous piece; Beth. You touched the ache exactly where it lives, even when I couldn’t have quite named it. Thank goodness we have each other.

Thank you so much for this, beth. Thank you for the hug, and the words. I needed both. I feel very much the same about everything - daughters and boys, my knees, and the election. Thank you for taking the time to write this.

I’m so sorry your knee is giving you trouble. I’m also sorry that your girls are beginning to feel the weight of having a body in a world that had too many opinions on other people’s bodies. I’m sure I didn’t do a good job discussing those things with my daughter. I hope you share a bit of what you said to both Jane and Ellen. It will help me prepare to talk to my granddaughter when the world comes for her.

As a self-appointed, parasocial and protective auntie of all of the Pantsuit Politics team's children, I'm sending the sweetest of virtual cobblers to you, Beth. The conversations your having with your girls are enough to ponder for days even without the swirling world around us. Truly, truly I can't think of anyone better to guide conversations as delicate as these with your girls than you. Sending love.
