Here’s my thesis: our view of Donald J. Trump as unprecedented is evidence of unbridled optimism. And I love that for us. I want to hang on to it. Today, I look to the past to remind me that we’ve always been governed by scoundrels and thieves, liars and opportunists. Still, we make remarkable progress, and I believe that we will again.
