Do we need to believe it’s a good idea or IS it a good idea? Why do Americans have to get on board? Maybe citizens don’t want their country to be at war anymore. Why can’t leaders get on board with what the people want? (I know, I know…giant country, some people are already on board with anything this admin does and/or with actions to hurt Iran…) but big picture more generally why can’t we strive for a day where leaders and experts are “selling us” that peace is a good idea?!
I really appreciate Sarah and Beth bringing Joel and Rep Landsman on the show because it has clarified the source of my frustration with “the establishment.” None of this is normal and I need the grownups to act thusly. I cannot wrap my head around how anyone is able to move through their day as if everything still works the way it did a decade ago.
I am troubled by the way Joel talked about the "sacrifice" of human lives here. By tone of voice alone, I didn't feel like he thinks life is sacred. And I know this wasn't his intention, but the way I received his words brought to mind "human sacrifice." Past that, I found it difficult to "get on board," has he says, with this war.
I really liked Joel's advice on how Democrats need to acknowledge the things that have gone right in Iran and at the same time ask the really hard questions to force Republicans to support their stance. I know I automatically want to say "no" to everything that comes from this administration and it is important to remember we don't understand everything and it really helps to talk to experts.
I appreciated Joel’s knowledge about how a “normal” administration (democrat or republican) would be conducting this war with Iran. I also agree with him that Democrats in Congress should be doing more than simply being opposed to the war but should be asking pointed questions. The problem I had, however, is that this administration isn’t normal, nor is this Congress. I can’t see Trump ever admitting that we can’t do something on our own. And since he conducts this war by whims & feelings, I can’t see our allies ever agreeing to work with him. As Beth said, Trump and Co. aren’t likely to be different than they are, and I’d say the same is true of this Congress. So I’d have liked to hear Joel address what he sees as more likely to happen given those realities. What should we be preparing for? What can we say to our representatives in terms of “if yall don’t act, we’re facing the following,” that is realistic? As it was, I found his answers informative but also frustrating.
