Kudos to Rep. McBride for accurately diagnosing the need to de-center Trump and re-center constituents.
If the Democratic party had an iota of political instincts left, they would have an ad in the can for exactly this moment in the shutdown thay highlights how little Trump cares about anyone but himself and use it to recenter the narrative. It could go something like:
"Trump doesn't care about you. We know the Democratic party has failed you and we heard you loud and clear in the last election. But we want to help, we're ready to learn and we're listening. Also, true Americans don't let their neighbors go hungry. If you can, please donate to Feeding America to help us all get through this, together."
I gotta say it: Rep. McBride and Mayor-Elect Mamdani are both former state legislators. Coincidence that the most effective politicians and leaders who are actually getting things done are coming from state legislative experience? I think not.
-As always, sincerely and with love, your friendly neighborhood state legislatures zealot.
P.S. Excellent conversation. Rep. McBride is truly excellent in every way. What a stellar human. Glad she's in Congress.
I am so grateful for this episode! I thought she was thoughtful and considered and respectful! She epitomizes Michelle Obama “when they go low we go high”. I am particularly grateful that the focus was more about her as a representative and not on the fact she is trans. That said, I would love if she would be willing to talk more about that. There are so many wrong and fearful beliefs about trans people and she demonstrates that she is just like any other person!
Also, for the love of God and all that is Holy…I can’t believe judgemental people can still shock the shot out of me! Seriously, with the spend time with you because we wont be together after we die!!
Good grief, the attention addiction and "a lot of these people are not well" comments. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right explanation.
And I'm so glad she mentioned Ted Lasso!! I've often thought that show was a shining example of what people are CLEARLY are hungry for. More media like Ted Lasso. More politicians like Ted Lasso. Thank you very much.
I didn't know much about Rep McBride before this episode beyond the fact that a lot of Progressives were angry at her after her interview with Ezra Klein. And after listening to this episode, I want to bang my head against the wall about that reaction. This is exactly what we need in Congress - someone who is pragmatic, willing to compromise, and able to talk to the other side to work on things they agree on. She is absolutely correct - continuing to harp on MAGA's faults, no matter how egregious, will get us nowhere. This is something I have a lot of trouble remembering myself, so it must be especially hard when you are faced directly with it every day, so kudos to her for keeping it front of mind.
After this interview, I am really hoping that she can rise up in the leadership. I was impressed, and I will be following her more closely after this.
Going into this episode I was slightly skeptical when the PP team was referring to Representative McBride as basically the most impressive politician they've interviewed, just because you guys have had some really great interviews! But now that I have listened, I think I agree. She was able to articulate some really deep, fundamental truths about the current political landscape in such a clear way - particularly what she said about politics becoming entertainment when people stop believing that politics can produce actual change. And I liked the balance she struck between taking her duty to her constituents, and the challenges of the current moment, very seriously while maintaining a sense of humor and lightheartedness, and a desire to work across the aisle. I hope you are able to have her back on a future episode; I could have listened to the three of you for hours. :)
I really loved this episode and two things stuck out to me.
1. Her point about how when people stop feeling that politics can provide progress, they start looking for politics to provide entertainment. YIKES.
2. She spoke several times about how unfair it is that we have to keep working hard and showing up in the middle of truly terrible behavior, but at the end of the day - no matter how unfair it is, the work must still get done.
The “unfairness” of it all bothers me on such a deep level and her way of just naming and owning it without it sounding whiny or complaining is truly remarkable. So much respect for her, what a wonderful guest!!
Here! Here! Thank you all so much, Pantsuit Politics team :) You are a thoughtful bright spot in the midst of a lot ugly sh*t flying around and are so appreciated ❤️
"he’s decided to be nice to all Democrats because he wants to spend time in this lifetime with us since he won’t spend any time in eternity with us".... so I take it this representative she was talking to believes he won't be going to heaven? His wording suggests a Freudian slip...
What a fantastic interview. I could have listened for hours! Hope you can rebook with her again in the future. She is well known and loved in Delaware and I’m so grateful she represents me and my fellow Delawareans.
I also recommend her book and learning about her life. She is wise beyond her years!
In your next interview with Congresswoman McBride, I would love to hear you all explore how her faith (she is a lay leader in the Presbyterian Church) informs her politics. I think you all would be especially well positioned to have this conversation-as I think she really challenges the assumptions about what "Christian" politics looks like in this country-a much needed reframe!
This was a fantastic interview. I am so impressed with Representative McBride.

Yes! to the "it IS unfair, but we do it anyway." I loved that, too! If she (especially) can have that attitude, I can, too. -m
This was the breath of fresh air I needed about congress. Thank you!!!
Echoing the delight in the comments on this episode! Happy happy birthday! And y’all get a Taytay pop tart story?! Dang… that’s quite the gift!!
And a talk with a Rep who feels so authentic and smart and kind and wise and practical and and and

I didn’t realize this about her. Would love that conversation.
Which makes the “because we won’t spend time with you after this life” comment even more galling. 🙄
