I need a Beth Silvers script for a nuanced reply to the people in my life who are saying that they had no idea he would act this way and regret voting for him. I’m sure my face is saying volumes, but none of it is nuanced.
I felt like vomiting when I woke up on inauguration day. But it was also MLK Day so I participated in a day of service event. The next day I read or listened to news sources that inform but don't trigger me. So, self-care alongside resposible citizenship. We can do this!!!!! We sooooo have got this!!!!!
I agree with The New Republic article that says just make him do the job— don’t step in and bail him out. (https://newrepublic.com/post/190337/trump-second-term-democrats-respond) But it will take some toughness on the opposition’s part, being willing to let the pain play out rather than run interference. There’s a co-dependent response— trying to soften the edges of his terrible policies— or the alternative, where we allow the leopard to do its thing. I’m cautious that we don’t have the stomach for the Find Out part. And that doesn’t even touch how we protect those directly impacted
This is a weird thought I had but I'm going to ignore the news for a month or so and - wait for it -- just give Trump a chance. I loved his line about keeping us out of war, for instance. I am going to fight the knee-jeek reaction to him this time bc it almost killed me last time. We WANT our county to succeed, yes? We want people to succeed. Half the county voted for this change. Today I'm going to just try to let the anger go and give grace and let him try to do the job.
I have been thinking along these lines as well. Many members of my family and acquaintances voted for this man/administration and are excited for him to be in office. I want to be curious about what they are looking forward to or what good things they are anticipating with him in charge because I for sure can’t see it. Living in fear and hatred is too exhausting and doesn’t do anyone any good. I’m working hard to figure out how to prevent myself from spiraling into doom and gloom while also being aware and honest about the real and serious consequences of his presidency. I’m grateful for this community, especially Sarah and Beth, as I try to find this balance.
I want to gently push back on half the country voted for him. That’s not true when you consider the number of eligible voters who didn’t vote. 69% of eligible voters did not vote for him.
I do think not voting is a kind of vote. I don’t love it, but if you’re not willing to show up and make a choice then you’re saying you’re okay with what happens.
Miller is scary af. But I am fatigued, y’all. All of this is exhausting. I am tired of being outraged. I remind myself that apathy is what got Germany in the situation it was in in the 1930’s. But dang. I’m just tired. So he’s not wrong about that.
Wasn’t Germany a weak sauce new democracy at the time? Like it’s a little different from an over 200 year old tradition. Jan 6th was not a good vibe here, but the fact that it didn’t actually stop the transition of power matters too.
Yes. The new administration will need the rest of us to be disorganized, overwhelmed, reactionary. We will not be!! We will be steadfast, focused, grounded, and believing in Hope.

This, this, this! I HAVE to choose thoughtful responding over reacting. I think staying off daily headlines will help
Cannot wait to listen. What an honor to get to interview him!
I know! I’m a total fan!!!

A gentle question: why can't one both give Trump a chance AND stay informed via watching the news?

This makes me think that they were ultimately fine with whatever way the election went…like approval either way
Yes and I also don’t see it as half the country voted for this change. A large portion were indifferent or uninformed.
My point is that the indifference that made them not vote is a type of consent

Maybe. We'll see.

A big Amen, Sarah!
