I’m late to the party but here is my TLOASG review. I know we’re all annoyed by folks feeling like they need to prove their legitimacy by sharing their identities but I’m going to do it here because I think it’s important context. I have been a swiftie since the beginning. I am 9 years younger than Taylor and have really grown up with her music as the soundtrack to my life. I can identify almost any Taylor Swift song within 3 seconds and if you ask me if a song is Taylor’s Version or not, I’m usually correct. In terms of my taste, my top 3 albums are Speak Now, Evermore, and Red in some order and my least favorite album is Lover. My favorite song is Dear John. I love a fountain pen or quill pen lyric. I love a devastatingly sad song. I love a righteously angry song. And as I get older, what I most want to hear Taylor turn her attention towards is fame and her work. I’m an academic. Grad school at the PhD level seems to share a lot with early career musicians and entertainers. It’s a high pressure environment where you are paid hardly anything for massive amounts of work that is very necessary for the functioning of a university and there are lines of people eager to take your place if you falter or aren’t grateful enough or aren’t willing to sell your soul at the altar of success. You are almost entirely at the mercy of men (it is almost always men, especially in physics which is my field) who aren’t assholes if you’re lucky but are who almost certainly suffer from survivors bias. They survived the system so if you can’t handle it, it’s a character flaw on your part, not a systems issue. Academia is absolutely making a deal with a devil who has a bigger dick than you. On top of all of this, there is insane pressure to publish constantly, on both you and your professors, which can make for some tricky dynamics. You’re only as hot as your last hit baby. Throw in funding fights and departmental politics and it’s a toxic stew. “I protect the family” is essentially a line I heard from my advisor while he was refusing to provide necessary support as my husband and I finished our dissertations. I’m in a much healthier department now (small liberal arts college!) but phew. I can relate to Taylor singing about her work, especially early career stuff.

All this to say, TLOASG is an interesting addition to the Taylor cannon when viewed through the lens of work. Here is a woman who climbed almost every mountain (except that elusive Song of the Year Grammy!) and can harbor a grudge like no other. Father Figure is a fascinating song because it has all the anger and sadness and contempt of My Tears Ricochet but with the power dynamics flipped. I think Taylor is at a point in her career now where she is the one paying the checks before they kiss the mahogany grain. She has perspective and can probably see what would lead a person to treat someone the way she was treated as a young musician. Her embodying that toxic power via a sexualized male lens is so interesting to me. It’s almost Taylor playing with drag and gender dynamics in a way that The Man tried to, but absolutely failed. Relationships are about power and I think Taylor understands that acutely now.

I think that’s the other side to this album. Relationships are about power and I get the sense that Travis is the first relationship Taylor has been in that puts her in the power up position. This album drips with the sentiment “I will give up power to be with you. I want to share my power with you.” And I think that’s is part of where a lot of the critique of the album as anti-feminist is coming from. There’s this sense (I think especially among younger gen Z who have grown up in the political era of Trump) that the feminist project is clinging to power in any way that we can (see, Barbie). And what older women (and people in general) understand is that all relationships are negotiations of power and true partnership can only really exist between equals. If Taylor wants companionship (which she’s been writing about wanting since she was a teenager) then she’s gonna have to lay down some of her power. And ultimately, I think that’s what this album is about. It’s her exploring how to be the biggest pop star in the world and also be in partnership. Does she do this deftly? No. It’s a clumsy album and falls short of the impossible standard she has set for herself. The sequencing is off. The love songs are hollow because they aren’t vulnerable. Eldest daughter gets the closest to a Delicate level love song because it’s one of the few places she’s vulnerable. The promise of the premise isn’t there. I don’t learn anything new about how Taylor feels about Travis.

What I will say is that the prosody and production is immaculate. I love hearing Taylor’s voice over real instruments. While I thought that Jack and Aaron really did a beautiful job with TTPD, I like the new sound on this album.

We need Beth’s ideal order for TLOASG. Agreed that the song order isn’t great. It makes the first half of the album much stronger than the second and why does ruin the friendship come right after eldest daughter?

I have seen a lot of responses to criticism about TS and the new album, but I haven’t actually seen any of that criticism. Specifically the ones about her being a trad wife because she wants to have kids.

I need a citation to the original source text. Otherwise, I’m starting to think people manufactured outrage responses to criticism that doesn’t exist because they know it will get attention and now people are just responding to those responses.

By any metric and definition ICE is living out terrorist group activity. it's sanctioned, encouraged, and celebrated by people that are not remotely close to the areas that are getting hit--more often than not. It's been designed to hit those most vulnerable to being othered--and many of those vulnerable to buying the othering are fully buying into this. I CANNOT get over this once i saw it.

Sarah, I totally get your point. Americans currently don’t care enough about the autocracy stuff. But that’s why I would like Democrats to focus on this issue for the shutdown: to get them to care.

They should be talking about Trump’s illegal tariffs making things more expensive and giving him an illegal slush fund. They should be talking about illegal military action that could start a war with Venezuela. They should be talking about masked, badgeless agents doing warrantless kidnappings of people, including American citizens. They should be talking about Trump using American taxpayer dollars to festoon the White House in gaudy gold foil. In America, we have a People’s House, not a palace.

They should be talking about the rampant corruption between lawsuits, and the president awarding mergers to his sycophants, and his acquisition of stocks, and his crypto, and on and on. All so Trump can screw us and reward his rich friends, just like how they, yes, defunded our healthcare so they could give rich people a tax cut.

This should be a messaging layup for a competent political party, AND it gets to the truth of why Democrats were actually pressured to withhold their votes.

My reaction too!! The activated language is SO telling. I am amazed that educated people (My aunt was a school teacher for decades!) can't read it as propaganda.

I have so many questions about people joining ICE. First, how could you agree or want to treat people this way? Second, what are they going to do for work in a few years? This gig isn’t going to last forever and are they really going to be able to put this on their resume or in their work history and be able to explain it? Which leads to another question, what is their work history that lead them to this job? These stories are horrific and it’s terrible this is where we are as a country.

There was a job fair for ICE in my city recently and it was protested. I think all the time about who would choose to become an ICE agent, especially now that we know what they're doing in this administration. I can't imagine, nor imagine what they will do for a future career.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that wonders about this. And good on your city to protest this.

I was so happy when Sarah brought up Brandi’s album. I love her and did not enjoy her album with Elton… and also did not make endless TikToks discussing that point… I sent a message to the group chat and waited for the album we are about to hear…

Just saw a statement on the parents' page from my kid's college in Chicago (DePaul - Catholic and in Chicago, so a lot of Latino/Hispanic students) They have ramped up security due to ICE activity and are providing information to students on how to respond if stopped/ICE is nearby, safety information, where to report possible ICE sightings, etc.

If you know Chicago, you know that the Lincoln Park campus of DePaul is in one of the ritziest neighborhoods in Chicago. How is frightening students, staff, and administrators with incredibly unpredictable and erratic behavior of ICE agents making anyone safer?

Oh Beth, how lucky you are to be going to see Patty Griffin in Cincinnati! I do think she may be the balm we need for our hearts as we deal with broken politics right now. To motivate all of us to keep hope in these difficult times I suggest listening to: 1)"I Don't Give Up" from her "Children Running Through" album, 2)"When It Don't Come Easy" from her "Impossible Dream" album, 3)"10 Million Miles" (best heard live), When Trump is your head listen to 4)"Let Him Fly" from "Living with Ghosts", on days when the going is tough listen 5)"Mad Mission" from "Living with Ghosts, and to remind us all of the long fight to keep our liberal democracy 6)"Up to the Mountain (MLK Song) from "Children Running Through" and lastly to just pick up your spirits on those endless days of bad news listen to 7) "Heavenly Day" from Children Running Through. Enjoy her live performance!

Ok, I like you all, am tired of this being pushed to my algorithm… but like Sarah, I have a definite pull/fascination (perhaps too big a word) with the rich and famous. Anyhow, I am pulling most of my comment from something I said on Alise’s “Napp Time” and also adding in a thought or two … which is that maybe I am just sick of the incredibly curated way she runs her business empire. (And perhaps that’s the only way you get there?) but I just heard her say she doesn’t scroll online anymore, and has no apps on her phone, yet she had an album filled with social media references. And the variants… I’m sick of the variants which I do feel are purely a way for her to obtain steaming and sales records - over anything else (including money). I think she’s at the top and she doesn’t want to fade.. and if I was her I imagine that would be a terrifying prospect.

Further, I do think that now she holds too much power to “fairly” and nearly directly continue to call out other people in the industry. At this point given her fame and (some) of her fan base, I almost think it’s dangerous. Travis’ ex has received so much abuse just for being his ex and for a while there I thought she would come out and ask her fans to not spread such hate towards her...instead there’s a reference to her in a song. I can only assume that there have been threats to her and her life because of that, and to me.. I feel like that should maybe be addressed more. Same goes for the Charlie xcx of it all and I even had the same thoughts about Joe Alwyn. And to be clear I am saying this as someone who enjoys her music and while I don’t love this album, also think it’s fun & at times clever. I think she deserves to put out whatever music she wants to put out and I have no expectation of loving it all and that’s ok. But the business model side of it all being put over others safety and as a way to stay ahead is becoming too much for me.

Hahaha sure but they’re outdated internet references. I feel fairly sure she either still uses her phone or has her mom/Tree/friends/etc. scrolling for her. But I also could see at her level, no matter how much you try to unplug from the online culture, it’s going to seep in.

Sarah & Beth are applauding the absence of political messages in Taylor’s new album; meanwhile Zach Bryan just lit the country music world on fire with his new song criticizing MAGA. I guess it’s really true that we all contain multitudes.

I live here in Chicago and am a lifelong Chicagoan. I am so mad by all of this "man made chaos." I move about the city on public transit, by car and by foot. I traverse the metro Chicago area via the interstates, highways and thro streets. I have had to commute to a Western Suburb over the past 2 months sometimes via roads that take me through the areas that ICE is moving about. I have had to pass by the ICE detention center in Broadview until they recently closed the major road that goes by it. I have walked Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park almost daily and was doing so 2 weekends ago when ICE and the National Guard were "walking" or "patrolling" Michigan Avenue. All of this is such a waste of resources and none of us that live here want or need this nonsense. I feel and have felt completely safe, not threatened in my years of living and traversing the Chicago area. This is all for show and to "poke the bear" to get us to respond and start a fight so that Trump or whoever is in charge of this magnificent farcical show can come down even more heavy handed. Our city like most cities in the United States works best when the local government handles issues. We don't need this nonsense. I was school aged (10years old) during the Chicago riots and unrest in the 1960's and remember so much of it. The early feeling of empty streets (at the time I lived on the far north side of the city, worried that my father who worked downtown and commuted by CTA would not be safe, seeing protesters being beaten by law enforcement on the nightly news. Trump or whoever is in charge wants that type of 1968 riots and unrest to fuel his "game" and we are all just pawns. We all need to stay calm and peacefully protest (all of us need to do so in large numbers) and don't let this Federal administration get the upper hand. I do think Gov. Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, and the Mayor of Broadview should say "Now that you have sent the National Guard, that we did not ask for or need, since our local law enforcement can handle law enforcement, we could use your help in other support services like cleaning up poop, emptying trash cans and what not in our in our area parks and streets. While your troops here maybe you could help clean up graffiti, change light bulbs in our parks and thoroughfares and hop on the city street cleaning machines and give our streets and sanitation employees a hand. Hate to see the tax dollars wasted on National Guard troops standing around not doing anything." This would help keep our reputation as the city that works, the city with big shoulders and the number one destination for travel in the nation. This would give the current administration a bit to chew on. I have also been volunteering to walk kids to school so that parents that are afraid to go out can stay home and be safe from ICE. I am trying to frequent restaurants that are in ICE patrolled areas so that they can have revenue and don't have to close since the people that live in these areas are staying home trying to avoid ICE. I clap when I witness (and have witnessed) establishments refuse to let ICE agents use their restrooms....there is a job for the unwanted National Guard, they could set up and maintain roving portable bathrooms for ICE agents to use while they patrol our streets.
