Hey, Beth! I am totally going to steal the idea about friends bringing a couple of Christmas items they're tired of and doing some kind of swap! Could you share the wording of the text or invitation you used to invite people? Thanks!
I have the premium version of PocketCast and I don't have it set to auto download any Podcast cause that would eat up all of the storage space in my phone. None of my other frequently listened podcasts are missing episodes, and all of my premium content is still showing up.
I was one if those people that was pretty upset at the news. 🙋🏻♀️ To be very honest, I hadn’t really been keeping up with the shutdown progress or what was on the table. (I had other administration anxieties taking up my headspace 🙃) But my fear is just that…I think the message people not in the online politics bubble are seeing and hearing from our leaders is “Well we tried to fight Trump but it didn’t work, so were settling on this crap deal because were in a bad spot.” 🤷🏻♀️ Which like, that really sucks to hear and makes everything feel a little more hopeless.
Also for added context into my headspace, we recently had an instance nearby where an ICE agent shot a citizen, and (in far less important news) my healthcare premiums went up x4. Sooo I am very much in a fighting mood during this shutdown. I know in my head that there wasnt going to be negotiations and Dems would have to give in, that even a ACA deal wouldnt have fixed all the damage this administration has brought on, but my heart just needed the win.
I appreciate the nuance that you and some other Democrats are giving and reminding me its not the end of the world, AND also I think I needed the day or two to just vent and say “this all just really sucks”.
Is anyone else missing the regular show episodes from their pod cast feeds? My premium shows are showing up, but not the regular shows. This started happening after my annual subscription renewed on Nov. 8. 🥴
That's really weird. What podcast player are you using?
I have like 10 podcast players on my phone because I try to have a sense of how they all work, and I've noticed that sometimes if you miss an episode or skip an episode, it just decides you're not interested in the podcast anymore and stops downloading them (which is probably to save data on your phone). I think I would try unfollowing the podcast and then find it again, follow and download the latest episode to see if that resets the feed.
Great episode! I hit the section talking about decorations when I walked up to a house that goes full out for Halloween and they already have their Christmas inflatables up.
I wanted to share this local public radio piece about my community. One in three workers in my county work in some way for the federal government and the shipyard is full of essential workers so we have many people working without pay.
I wish I felt excited about the holidays. My husband has been unemployed for a little over a year now and the financial stress is too much. I don’t know how we will even get our kids Christmas presents and it all just makes me feel really sad. I would love to get good gifts for people, host a party, do all the fun holiday things but we are struggling to keep a roof over our head so none of that is possible.
As the spouse of a church music director December never brings much joy. I hate it because I want it to be joyful and focused on family but my husband is gone working so much and between the kids’ holiday schedules and his church schedules I carry so much extra burden. Every year I try to change my attitude in the hope of making it different but survival is the best option as I end up questioning both my faith and marriage every December (joking I think? 🤪😂).
Anyway, that being said, appreciated this episode and just a heads up to those in Christian faith communities, be gracious to your church staff and their families in December- including the partners. They are running on empty.
Thank you for this episode. I enjoy almost all of them but this one helped me calm my stress just a bit. I am happy to hear I am not the only one that has been attempting to not constantly go after Donald Trump. I live in Baldwin County Alabama which is an extremely red part of the state so I have to be careful. The occasional “he simply sucks” helps. Then of course Beth helps bring me back to reality that this is year one. Thank you both. I treasure your show and you all at PP.
I am a little less furious with my Senator Tim Kaine after this episode. But I'm still pretty hot over making a deal that they can't hold anyone to in the exact.same.week. as the elections where we basically told the Democrats to keep fighting. To make a deal with people who are not/have not been acting in good faith is stupid. I'll try to be optimistic that this vote helps people but I don't believe at all that anything they agreed to will happen. I really hope I'm wrong.
And side note on Tim Kaine... This vote happened on the weekend. His office doesn't have voicemail outside of business hours and was closed Monday so the only way to contact him was by email which is also stupid since probably no one would read it before he voted.
I would like to have a mom gathering where we either cyber shop together, or wrap presents, or both. I don’t know the right timing to do it though. Like right after Thanksgiving? Feels too late to do it early December. Anyway every year I want to do this and I just haven’t gotten the date down. Or the logistics!
I feel like the Democrats fumbled at the 1 yard line. I don't think there was ever going to be a satisfying off ramp to this shutdown and the media had the "DEMS CAVED" headline ready to publish. I think people were riding high from the Democratic victories last week and Trump's falling poll numbers, and then it came crashing down when 8 moderate Democrats broke away from their caucus to end the shutdown. I personally think if the shutdown started affecting Thanksgiving travel (plus the loss of SNAP benefits), it would have blown back on the Democrats, so I do think the government really did need to open this week. I think the messaging around these defections was political malpractice. For Angus King to go on tv and say the shutdown didn't work was such a stupid thing to do. Chuck Schumer needs to be replaced with someone who can meet the moment and understands the media environment.
As a federal employee, I am very grateful that there is some language pushing back on RIFs. It will be a huge relief to not have to worry about losing my job over the holidays. Me and my coworkers need a break from the RIF piano hanging over our heads. I was never really worried about not getting backpay because it is law, which Trump should know because he signed it!
I am proud of almost intuiting there was nuance to “the dems caving” after feeling a moment of shock when this news broke. I credit all the listening to and learning from many in this community, and of course Beth and Sarah. I don’t know if I would have been able to do that pre-PSP.
Speaking of room clean outs, from outside of politics... My daughter is the same age as Ellen and we did a big room clean out this summer. It was intense, but I highly recommend it. We cleared EVERYTHING except furniture out and moved it all into the adjacent room (ehem... My room 😳😬). This included all the tchotchkes, wall art, toys, etc. Then she saw how nice and clean it was with nothing in it and picked from the very large pile of her belongings, to go back in the room. This was a tiring process, for sure, but she only put about 50% of the items back in her room. We said goodbye to the barbie dreamhouse and a lot of the little girl stuff, and she has really enjoyed her paired down room that feels more true to who she is right now. It felt much more effective to pull it all out and put some back than the times where I've said "look around and decide what you don't want in here".
My grandparents ran an antiques and craft store in our little town. Every year around the holidays they did a big open house with wintry window displays. She served snacks and wassail. I have her recipe and the urge to make it this year. Might be fun and at least have the house smelling good.

Same question, and I’m curious how the exchange aspect will work! I want to do this with friends as well.

I mean “The ADHD of his own ego”, is going to live rent-free in all my thoughts on this 🙌👏

Love this idea. I need to do it with both my boys’ rooms. 😵💫

I think I'd be a great air traffic controller. I'm not down with mandatory overtime ever, though.
You'd be an EXCEPTIONAL air traffic controller.
