My contribution to the veggie discussion is that broccoli STEMS are legit yummy! I read something in some article about food waste that said that the stems were sweeter than the florets and it’s true! So buy the whole broccoli even if all you want is the floret cuz the stems make delicious carrot stick equivalents, plus I’m sure they would roast really well
I bet it’s not bamboo shoots Nicholas doesn’t like it’s water chestnuts- those are gross and always in those stir fry bags with the gross baby carrots too
I did not see it coming that the discussion on vegetables would be the most vehemently I would ever disagree with Sarah and Beth! I am also very curious how many people base favorite on what they eat the most. I immediately thought of artichokes but I don’t eat them often. They are a “special” vegetable.
The end of this episode is inspiring me to make one of my favorite meals this week—I do a ton of roasted veggies and pair it with roasted chicken apple sausages. I usually do broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, garlic, potatoes and sweet potatoes. But have also added tons of other veggies into the mix.
I live in Utah and am going to try out the restaurant Sarah suggested next time I go to Moab.
I will buy spinach and make a salad with it. But it goes bad so fast I immediately freeze the rest and use that for smoothies and stuff. Once my frozen stuff is out I’ll buy fresh again.
Also, my brother made me the best cauliflower I’ve ever eaten. It’s been years and I still remember that cauliflower. It was roasted but he made it to go with a roast chicken and somehow the drippings from the chicken roasted into it as well and it was amazing!
We make a roasted chicken and cauliflower that’s from Jacques Pepin and it’s one of my most favorite dinners ever! I can’t remember the exact name of the recipe but if you Google Jacques Pepin roast chicken I bet you can find it! It’s a whole chicken and has the most delicious marinade that also gets poured on the cauliflower to cook.
Full disclosure, I haven’t finished the episode. Not out of anger, I just needed to shower. Anyway, I finished the section on judge Dugan. I might be über biased when it comes to immigration related issues, but all I heard was “she had it coming. She shouldn’t have resisted”. She is a judge in her courthouse dealing with a case. A band of marauders (see my bias) in plain cloth come in and have badges of a nice group of three letter LEAs. But all they have is an administrative warrant. All that means is that there was no judge or magistrate involved, just another ice guy, maybe the one with most seniority or hairier heart. So the judge comes out and says you will not do that in my courtroom. This judge has a life of devoted to legal aid and now several years serving her community at the ground level. She knows that these kind of stunts go against public safety, because the moment you know they are arresting in the courthouse for immigration issues defendants won’t show up. So she does what is within her power. To avoid more circus she left them out the backdoor. Not escorted with armed constables, or hid them until the dark of night. Was it that the defendant was unsympathetic due to his misdemeanor assault case? I don’t understand why we are waiving this like “nothing to see here”.
Now, let’s do the Oklahoma mom and two daughters, drag undressed out of their house into the rain, while ICE ransacked the house, confiscated cash, a package of Zebra Cakes (this might be just me embellishing), and who knows what else. At the end they were just “oopsie daisy” carry on with your day. So far the money hasn’t been returned. Let’s see that’s not a big deal either. I’ll start: when you move from Maryland to beautiful Oklahoma, make sure not to get into a house prone to ICE raids.
I work for an agency with a building full of immigrants of all flavors seeking assistance. We have policies in place. ICE or any other LEA or a mix plate comes: we can’t stop them for accessing the public areas: lobby and public bathrooms. If they have just an “administrative warrant” that’s as far as they are going that time.
I’ll finish with this copied explanation:
“An “ICE warrant” is a form issued by certain immigration officers that names an allegedly deportable non-citizen and
directs various federal immigration enforcement agents to arrest that individual.
ICE warrants are issued for civil violations of immigration law, not criminal charges. They are also sometimes called
“administrative warrants.” An “ICE warrant” is not a real warrant. It is not reviewed by a judge or any neutral party to determine if it is based on probable cause.
An ICE warrant directs various federal immigration enforcement agents to arrest the person named in the warrant.
Because it is not issued by a judge, an ICE warrant does not give the immigration enforcement officer the authority to
demand entry to a home or private space in order to make the arrest.
ICE warrants do not generally provide a basis for a local or state law enforcement officer or agency (LEA) to arrest or
detain anyone.”
PS: I haven’t gotten to that part, but I saw it in the comments. Beets are delicious. Plain boiled. Roasted with some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and coarse salt. Pickled. In juice, specially with carrots, an oranges. I am the opposite of a health nut, or fitness enthusiast, or macro counting guy. Beets are just good eatings.
I love so many vegetables prepared so many ways (including steamed) it’s hard to pick one…but I noticed we’ve had few mentions of alliums like garlic, onions, shallots, etc. they may not be the stars but they are vegetable workhorses that make countless other dishes delicious.
Just read the New Yorker article on Persky. Talk about unintended consequences and nuance. A reminder that I need to look at issues carefully before spouting off about what should be done. Even better if our legislators would do the same. A good example is the Milwaukee judge situation. I, too, changed my reaction once I read the story and not just the headlines.
I’m a week late to the veggie discussion, but I bought this adorable tomato tee over the weekend and had to share! https://www2.hm.com/en_us/productpage.1293967002.html
I’m with Beth. Green beans are awful. They taste disgusting, and - how can something be furry and squeaky at the same time?

Someone please teach me about these breakfast salads?
It's asparagus season!!!! Just cooked in a steam pot, potatoes, sauce hollandaise 😇

This has me thinking how different it could be if the party/electorate had gone with Nikki Haley.

I’m with Sarah on the crinkle cut debate — they are alllllwayyyys soggy 😫
Beth, can you specify which Sonic is the good one for those of us that visit in July? Snacks from Sonic will be a happy adventure for me!
Is salsa a vegetable? If so? It’s the best one.
I’m going to say yes it is, because I count marinara sauce as a vegetable when I’m thinking about what my picky eater kid eats.

Have you ever tried golden beets?
Yes!!! Really good in my book. Are you pro beets or anti beets?
Pro!
I have always sensed a kinship.

Yes, I dearly love those aromatics!
