Today on the podcast, Sarah said she felt President Biden needed to hear from regular people that it was time to step down. She wanted to share her letter, in case you feel compelled to do the same.
Dear President Biden,
I have been a proud Democrat since the age of 18. While the party is not perfect, I have always been so proud of the way we have been a party of the future - of the way we prioritize solutions and change and care.Â
Last night’s debate left me despondent as a Democrat for the first time in my life.Â
I have felt disappointment after electoral defeat. I have felt fear in the face of Republican attacks and strategy. But I have never felt shame that my party couldn’t step up and do the right thing.Â
As the leader of the party, I am asking you to do that now. The right thing, the caring thing to do is to step aside and allow the party to select another candidate.Â
Presidential elections are about the future. You have done a long and admirable job of helping us craft that future. Your decades in public service and your four years as president are a testament to your devotion to this country. I know during that time you have seen public servants who couldn’t step aside when the time was right and you watched their legacy suffer as a result. I am begging you to be better and stronger than that.Â
America needs a leader who can craft a credible vision for the next 20 years because they will be there with us to face it. Our stakes are their stakes. We deserve that.Â
Please give the Democratic Party the chance to rise to the occasion and be the party I know we can be.
Please give America the chance to envision an empowering future instead of arguing about the past.Â
Please step aside as our candidate.Â
Sincerely,
Sarah HollandÂ
If you listen to More to Say, you know that I love the law. It's a weird thing to say because I hated being a lawyer. Just this morning, an old colleague joked in a text message about a work meeting, “Don’t you miss those days?" No, I definitely do not.Â
But I love the law. I love what meaning we make of precedent. I love examining all that a single word contains. I even occasionally love fussing over whether the meaning changes because the comma was placed here instead of there. I love the law even when I struggle with its results or interpretation or development. I love the law even when I feel skeptical of the people responsible for saying what the law is.Â
We planned to begin our July break next week. Instead, I'll be with you on More to Say to discuss the Supreme Court's barrage of late-June decisions. I love the law too much to do a hot take today. I need to study these cases and bring you my best analysis. Meet me on Patreon or Apple Podcast Subscriptions next week, and we'll go from there together.Â

The one thing we want you to know this week…
We got to talk with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro this week. Okay, that’s not the thing, but you will love this conversation.
We wanted to help get the word out now about Pennsylvania’s property tax/rent rebate program to reduce housing insecurity for Pennsylvania Seniors. Apply as soon as possible for the senior property tax/rent rebate. If you're in Pennsylvania, be sure to check your eligibility and apply. Benefits start going out on July 1. (They've also expanded their child and dependent care tax credit, and we’re a little jealous because want that for EVERYONE!)
The one thing we made this week we can’t stop thinking about…
We’ve been reading Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America this Election Year. We’ve learned so much about our current political environment from looking back at our early history. Whether you’re reading with us or not, I think you’ll find this conversation valuable.

Also, everyone saying they’re going to vote for Biden regardless…of course. If that’s the only option, I will too. But we are not the voters Biden needs to convince. He needs to convince swing voters in six key states that he can do the job through Jan 2029. He cannot make that case. If Biden stays in, Trump wins. Our ultimate goal should be keeping Trump away from the Oval Office. Both men showed themselves to be unfit last night. If we can find someone fit, they win
I copied and pasted your letter (changed details to reflect my own experience and feelings) and sent it to President Biden through the White House website. I like Joe Biden very much. I think he has done an excellent job as President. I'm proud of the historic legislation he has helped shepherd through Congress and I believe he successfully ushered us out of Covid and the disaster of the Trump presidency. But I am beside myself thinking about this election. At this point we can't judge Biden as the President (which I rate highly). We have to rate him as a candidate -- someone who can beat Donald Trump (the biggest threat to the United States in my lifetime), and he's failing. I hate it. I wish it was different. But this is where we are. Thanks for putting into words what I needed to say to Joe.
