Thanks for sharing your letter to the president with us Sarah! I used it as a go by and wrote one as well.
Dear President Biden,
I am proud to have voted for you in 2020. I am grateful for the work your administration has accomplished in the past 4 years. But after the past week, from the debate on Thursday night to the Supreme Court decisions Friday and Monday, I am deeply afraid about the upcoming presidential election.
I voted for you in 2020 happily because I believed I was voting for integrity, humility, and stability. I was proud that the Democratic party stepped up and did the right thing to unite against the existential threat of Donald Trump. I am asking you, as the leader of the party, to do the same thing now. I am asking you to step aside and entrust the future of the party to leaders who can be a stabilizing force for the next 20 years. I am asking you to be a guide and advisor to the next generation of leadership from the sidelines.
Donald Trump demands loyalty from his followers against all logic. I am begging you to be different than he is, and to have the humility and trust to cede power to any of the the immensely talented and capable Democratic party leaders who have supported you all this time.
Americans are desperate to see a vision of the future in our political system. Please be the leader to give us that vision by stepping aside and using your power to point us forward.
Had to write another after reading the share's. The country is begging for a younger candidate. They have been for a while. I believe anyone younger without a lot of baggage can beat the guy who has just 35% of the population.
I do so agree with you! Ruth Bader Ginsberg came to mind for me as well. I adore her. I am hoping that Obama reminds him of her mistake. I'm thinking that perhaps her mistake was made in part to influence Joe's decision.
I sent two letters. My vote is not in question. But I don’t see a path to swing voter victory for the Democratic Party with things as they currently are.
2) Look at your state party leadership and see if there's a contact us page
(may state party doesn't have easy access to email addresses, but there is a contact form that you can fill out and send your letter)
Also, you might look more locally at your county party chair (that is probably a person you could meet in person), they are probably going to the convention or know people who are. Delegates are assigned by state, you can get the message to the local party and it will make it's way up the chain.
Also, everyone saying they’re going to vote for Biden regardless…of course. If that’s the only option, I will too. But we are not the voters Biden needs to convince. He needs to convince swing voters in six key states that he can do the job through Jan 2029. He cannot make that case. If Biden stays in, Trump wins. Our ultimate goal should be keeping Trump away from the Oval Office. Both men showed themselves to be unfit last night. If we can find someone fit, they win
I think we should write or call our Dem senators and reps and tell them we want them to publicly support Biden stepping down and supporting someone new. Joe needs to hear it from other elected Dems; pundits and journalists aren’t going to change his mind
You may be too young and idealistic to understand that this no time to change course. Yes Biden should step up on the campaign trail and speak of the accomplishments of his administration. The Democratic Convention would be total chaos! You will be old one day and realize the virtue of age and wisdom.
Judy, I disagree with Sarah, but i read her letter differently. I do think she respects experience and wisdom, and we know she values nuance and constructive solutions.
I share Sarah’s impatience to put the previous administration and COVID behind us and create a vision for the next twenty years—but I also don’t think now is the time to change candidates.
When I think back to the debates four years ago, I saw lots of talent but not enough experience to inspire confidence; now I see those same candidates with much more experience.
Four years also gives the Republicans time to get their house in order. I have hope that the choices in 2028 will feel more positive and the race less potentially catastrophic.
Yes. It was an atrocious debate. This shouldn’t have been so astonishing to people. I am for Biden and will vote for him again. Yes. The debate was a fiasco but I believe Biden will win in November. Things always work out exactly how they are supposed to work out. Let’s move forward from last night, encourage people to vote and let’s hope the democrats can find a leader for 2028.
I copied and pasted your letter (changed details to reflect my own experience and feelings) and sent it to President Biden through the White House website. I like Joe Biden very much. I think he has done an excellent job as President. I'm proud of the historic legislation he has helped shepherd through Congress and I believe he successfully ushered us out of Covid and the disaster of the Trump presidency. But I am beside myself thinking about this election. At this point we can't judge Biden as the President (which I rate highly). We have to rate him as a candidate -- someone who can beat Donald Trump (the biggest threat to the United States in my lifetime), and he's failing. I hate it. I wish it was different. But this is where we are. Thanks for putting into words what I needed to say to Joe.
I respectfully disagree. Biden had a bad night trying to both fact check and debate a professional liar. He's campaigning strong today. I felt very discouraged after the debate. Posts such as Heather Cox Richardson's provided helpful perspective.
Same—I’m not ashamed to be a Democrat and I’m not ashamed of my party. I also disagree with Sarah that changing candidates is the appropriate action. I can see why she feels that way. I just think the timing for that conversation is wrong for many reasons. And I’m ready to vote FOR Biden, not just against Trump. But the Democratic Party is a big tent and I’m glad Sarah is willing to speak her mind.
That sounds right… and Harris saying she wasn’t interested in running for POTUS. But I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the events from Nov ‘20- Jan ‘21, nor that we’d be facing another election with DJT as the Republican candidate. Many, many people believed that Biden would be best in that scenario because he’d already proven he could beat Trump, though I haven’t heard that argument/rhetoric in a few months

Thank you for sharing this Sarah. So well worded and helpful inspiration for those of us wanting to do something and feeling stuck.
Whew, this letter. Expresses EVERYTHING for me. Thank you. I’m going to do the same as some of the above and send to him.
I sent two letters. My vote is not in question. But I don’t see a path to swing voter victory for the Democratic Party with things as they currently are.
How do we send a message to our state's electors?
1) Google "State Name" plus "Democratic Party."
2) Look at your state party leadership and see if there's a contact us page

I just dropped my letter in the mail. It at least helps me feel like I am doing something!
Based on the increase in social media postings today, definitely doesn’t look like he’s dropping out.

Do I remember when Biden was elected he said he wouldn’t run for reelection, or did I make that up?
Ok so I googled it—he didn’t do it publicly but he assured an aide he wouldn’t run again.
