Primary results are sending signals, Republicans are finally simmering out loud, and conditions inside Delaney Hall make the immigration crisis impossible to look away from
I have read several articles in the past year about improved prison facilities also being better for staff. I imagine the same is true for those who work in detention centers. Less illness, less violence, less heat and cold related ailments, less staff turnover. The people working at these places are the working class the Administration purports to support, but they don't seem to mind that the conditions negatively affect them too.
Is there an opposite of time confetti read? Anyone have authors where you have to plan a time you won’t be interrupted because you’re a holy terror if you’re interrupted? [raises hand sheepishly] Just wrapped up one today: the latest in Deanna Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell mystery series. Laugh-out-loud historical mystery.
Whoever recommended "the correspondent" unlocked a new fear about trying to get work done on vacation, so I guess thats a 2 for 1 on the reading instead of working front. Thats why I usually just read sff.
My time confetti is a combination of exercise, podcasts, journaling, reading, and streaming. Depends on my mood and location. I have a LOT of commute and waiting time... which is now tapering off as licences and diplomas are earned!!
I'll never forget this. One day I was sitting on a bench at a playground waiting, reading a book, after a particularly difficult week alone again with all 3 boys doing everything for everyone. I was super stressed, trying to keep my shit together. Another mom came up to me and said "Look at you, sitting and reading a book for yourself. God, I envy you"... and I immediately stopped feeling sorry for myself. She was out there chasing toddlers as they stumble over everything, hit other kids, meltdown over nothing, and try to eat inedible nature. And I didn't even have to look up at my older kids. Perspective ❤️
For the time confetti reading: Sangu Mandana A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping and Nora Goes Off Script from Annabel Monaghan. Also (hopefully this is OK!) my contemporary romcom, The One You Fall For. I call it my Dolly book because she helped inspire the family. :-)
I’m glad you brought up Delaney hall. This is in my sisters neighborhood. They’re dropping off supplies for protestors, etc. there’s also a commissary fund you can send directly to detainees. It’s horrific.
Emotional support read: The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion. If you like Jane Austen and British literature and something light but intriguing, highly recommend. Fits very well with the notion of time confetti as it's formatted like daily diary entries.
The downside: waiting for the next book in the series to come out....
These books have been my bedtime reading for the past couple months! I can read a single entry if I’m exhausted or read for 15-20 minutes if I need more time to wind down. And they don’t stress me out right before bed.
I also want to get out of the immigration policy doom loop. Everyone says they dislike the inhumanity of it but how do we find the political will to make it change? I just read today that after announcing the draconian change to applying for residency (now you have to leave the country to apply....for some people a visa to residency process can take YEARS!) there has been a lot of push back from the business sector, chamber of commerce, etc. I wish the private sector would rally together and fund some practical political campaigns to get some shit done on streamlining visa processes, increasing caps, making legal immigration easier, efficient, safer for all parties involved. Like Beth said- we have the $ and technology to make it better. Who is going to step up?
On the reading, I read almost exclusively through the Kindle app on my phone and usually from Kindle Unlimited. I know that’s controversial - giving my money to Amazon and reading light meaningless stories - but it’s what has kept me reading these last 2 years after barely reading at all for many. And I’m a better person for it.
I read on my Kindle or on the Kindle app on my phone with books that I get through the library. I also removed all social media from my phone at the beginning of the year so reading is the only option when I'm out and about.
I used to hate reading in the kindle app on my phone, but it has really helped with reading in the short bursts of time I have, like waiting for potatoes to cook or a washing machine cycle to finish 🙃
Re reading while waiting in the summer, I was initially bristling a bit at Beth’s decision not to incorporate work into your summer waiting time, and that is because I had a job that I could take with me when I was out and about, and I felt so fortunate to be able to work my work while also living a great life. And you brought me around, Beth. One challenge with the work when you’re out and about is it’s hard to keep track of how much time you are giving away, and I am happy for you that you have that pure fun and relaxation time for your summer. For Sarah’s dilemma about books when you are out and about I recommend an audiobook that you can listen to when you’re in the car or in your EarPods when you’re waiting. Especially since you read multiple books at once. ❤️
In defense of my state's (Ca) slow counting process, it gives me great comfort to know that so many people are given the opportunity to vote up until the last minute, and that the ballots are thoroughly vetted before being counted. It's hard to accuse a state of fraud when they are this slow and methodical. I can be patient.
I always read multiple books at a time and one is on my kindle so I can pick it up whenever. My super old kindle is now not able to view new books I get. I like the idea of a small ereader that's not my phone.

I spend most of my time waiting on kids by walking and listening to podcasts or audiobooks. I also ALWAYS have my Kindle with me.

Before I had kindle unlimited I was giving Amazon way more money per year because I was just buying every book i wanted. 🤣🤣🤣
I like Kindle Unlimited for accessing series, like Murderbot, Murder in an Irish …, Sally Rigby’s books, Sonali Dev’s books, etc.

Yeah, I have no problem with this. It is mainly the horse race watchers who are bothered.
