Just finished this excellent episode! HISTORY AND FOOD! what could be better! THANK YOU SARAH AND BETH SO MUCH!!!! LOVED IT!!!

I've read alot about presidential history, most recently Kearns-goodwin's book, and need to read more about Ladybird-growing up in the 60s didn't give me much info about her! But i haveta read more on her whistle-stop trips!!!!!

Your food comments were interesting! We used to farm and grew the large squash that i roasted and pureed and made many many recipes with them! I now buy a large squash from the local nurseries as they're cheaper than by the pound at the grocery. Agree that pumpkin brownies are excellent! i have about 12 pumpkin cheesecakes which were my go-to, until our old roommate (of 30 yrs) starting making pumpkin pies...which do nothing for me! This year i went with a tiramisu basque cheesecake w/ no crust and it was EXCELLENT!!! Will be in the rotation again next yr! i agree w/ others that pancakes and waffles w/ the remaining squash are excellent-i add apple to both for another kick!! And squash pecan soup is the best of the soup recipes, but curry ones come in a close second!!

The other thanksgiving favorite this yr was our son/dau-in-law's squash/pork pot stickers! WOW. Stunning flavors! (we typically make regular potstickers and other dim sum for NY eve-twice in a holiday season is great!!!)

My other reason to write-in is for left-over use: My hubby made 2 kinds of cranberry sauce this yr and we have alot left: one regular and one w/ our jalapenos -which, from the PNW ,aren't tooo hot!!Years ago i found a Flaxseed meal/oat/cranberry sauce pancake recipe which is stunning. i made it last wk and still have the jalapeno one so will make again tomorrow. I also found a scone recipe and made these today-they WERE lite and cakey, but they needed vanilla or something to bring out flavors!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!

I love your word. I've been thinking about it since I heard this episode. May we all have more analog lives in the coming year!

Dressing for life. I make my family’s dressing recipe and am someone like the 5th or 6th generation to do so. My 9-year-old helped me this year and I was thrilled to text my 96-year-old grandma that we had another generation in on the tradition! We honestly have no idea how far it goes back.

Dry dressing? I don’t know her. Mostly because you prep the dressing the day before (there is soaking of dried bread in water and mixing in chicken stock involved), and then drench the top in butter before baking. This ensures that the top and edges get crispy but the underneath and center stay moist.

The first thanksgiving I spent with my husband’s family, my MIL pulled out a box of Stove Top and I was SHOCKED. I spent most of the meal texting my family for emotional support. 😂

Beth, I am with you 100% on the specialness of Thanksgiving and making food from scratch - including the stuffing! I use Ina Garten’s sausage and herb stuffing every year and it’s the BEST. Also, I make three stuffings every year. One dairy free, one gluten free, and one with all the gluten and dairy! I have several food allergies in my family and I want everyone to have homemade food that was prepared with love!

I also always make two new desserts every year based off of NYT cooking recipes. This year I made pecan linzer bars and a chocolate peanut butter pie.

Best use of leftover pumpkin is in either pancakes or waffles!

Lastly, I too identify as a food snob - my husband is a chef (and James Beard nominee - sorry, wife brag moment!) and we love leftovers!! We will eat the same food for four days in a row. 🤣🤣 But speaking of repurposing leftovers - make a turkey Shepard’s pie with those leftovers!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

I forgot corn pudding. Corn pudding rules. I don't know what other people call it. I just know the recipe is like 1 box jiffy cornbread mix, 1 can corn, 1 canned creaned corn, 1 tub of sour cream, an egg, I don't remember the rest. Not sure if it's a side or a dessert.

Wonderful to hear about Lady Bird's whistle stop trips! My grandparents rode along on part of the trips and had a railroad spike with a note from Lady Bird hanging in their house. My grandmother loved First Lady stories, so I grew up listening!

How did I not know this?? I think because Beth, like me, always says ‘my sister’ and I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say Kimberly lol.

Now Maggie, in the nicest possible way, go away and enjoy Thanksgiving and get off here 😁

When will prices for the Minneapolis conference be posted? I'm hoping this is the one I could attend! I wanted the MTS but it's too expensive for our budget, so fingers crossed for the Minneapolis one!

First and foremost, Thanksgiving MUST have homemade rolls. Anything from a can, a mix, the freezer, a bakery, etc. is complete and utter garbage for Thanksgiving, and serving those should cause a full lifetime of shame.🤪Something both my husband and I grew up eating on Thanksgiving, but doesn’t seem super common, is homemade noodles. Everyone’s first response is, “spaghetti?” No, absolutely not. These are egg noodles, I suppose. You mix the dough, roll it out, hand cut the noodles, let them dry overnight, then cook them in turkey broth/drippings right before serving. They end up being in sort of a gravy-like sauce. The correct way to eat them is on top of your mashed potatoes, but some people find that controversial. They are wrong.🤣 If I make the mashed potatoes, I put whole cream and butter in them.😋Also, if the baked dressing you are eating is dry, it seems like maybe it was not made correctly. I can’t tell you which pie is the best, because so many are so good, but Pecan is objectively at the bottom of the list. We don’t even make it, because no one wants it. Lol.

I’m mostly in it on Thanksgiving for the leftover sandwiches. Extra sharp cheddar, a little mayo, leftover homemade cranberry sauce and turkey. Butter and (ideally) Penzey’s Sandwich sprinkle on the outside. Cook in a panini press or on the stove like grilled cheese.

My hot take is that pumpkin is trash. My pumpkin spice latte of preference is a dirty chai, and I will use any leftover pumpkin from something I make for others in frozen Kongs for my dog.

Could someone please explain why the White House Historical Society raising private funds to maintain and renovate the white house doesn't ring corruption bells? Is it just because the nonprofit provides a level of separation from the president?

My favorite is the cranberry sauce. I am obsessed with this recipe. More ingredients than your basic sauce but so so yummy. Leftovers are great in a yogurt parfait. Or, when I didn’t have any cranberry juice, I shook up some of this with vodka for my sister’s cocktail (strained, of course). 😄

A couple of years ago we went to Weber Grille for Thanksgiving and had things like steak, ribs, and burgers. And breaking tradition was so good that we are going to another Chicago restaurant that is not serving the traditional Thanksgiving meal again this year.

Ok listen. You need to make a baked brie for Thanksgiving apps. You also MUST throw the canned cranberry sauce in the trash and make the real thing. Mostly for the sake of the MOST PERFECT GRILLED CHEESE.

On Friday, you’re going to assemble the grilled cheese with two slices of sourdough, spread with leftover brie, add a few little dollops of your homemade cranberry sauce, add turkey, top with some more brie. Call me when you wake up from your post heavenly turkey sammy nap.

For some reason I never think to make this any time other than the day after Thanksgiving, but I look forward to this more than I do the actual Thanksgiving meal.
