Taylor Swift: In praise of an uncomplicated good time
A ranking of Sarah's favorite songs and lyrics on the album
You know what we all needed this week? Some goddamn fun.
After weeks of political violence and presidential score-settling, Taylor Swift has entered the chat and given us The Life of a Showgirl - her 12th studio album and the current front page of the internet.
And the choir said? HALLELUJAH. Because let me tell you what I couldn’t take after weeks of Elizabeth Gilbert’s confessions and Ezra Klein criticism, another fucking sermon.
Give me an ode to good sex, rainbow-filled skies full of love, and a little bit of snarky gossip to round it out! Here are my favorite songs on the album, with what I humbly believe to be the best lyrics in each song
Wi$h Li$t
Have a couple kids, got the whole block lookin’ like you
We tell the world to leave us thе fuck alone, and they do, wow
Y’all know all I want in life is to hear this woman’s take on motherhood. This little glimmer in combination with her delight at getting to fall in love while being the most famous woman on the planet!!! Put it in my veins.
Wood
(Ah) It’s you and me forever dancing in the dark
All over me, it’s understood
Yeah, that’s right. I love a woman getting exactly what she needs. I hope this woman is somewhere telling everyone she knows, “IT TURNS OUT SHE WAS READY!”
Opalite
I had a bad habit of missing lovers past
My brother used to call it, “Eating out of the trash”
Laughed. Out. Loud.
Honey
Buy the paint in the color of your eyes (Of your eyes)
And graffiti my whole damn life
I love the technicolor aspect of this album. The way she paints her HUGE famous life as one dimensional until Travis showed up is so beautiful and vulnerable. Everything changes when someone says honey and means it.
Eldest Daughter
Pretty soon, I learned cautious discretion
When your first crush crushes something kind
When I said I don’t believe in marriage
That was a lie
(Honorable mention)
Every eldest daughter
Was the first lamb to the slaughter
So we all dressed up as wolves and we looked fire
This isn’t my favorite song melodically, but the lyrics made me cry.
Actually Romantic
How many times has your boyfriend said
“Why are we always talkin’ ‘bout her?”
Petty Taylor is (almost) as good as in love Taylor.
The Fate of Ophelia
Keep it one hundred on the land (Land), the sea (The sea), the sky
Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes
This is one of the catchiest songs on the album. Plus, who doesn’t love literary allegory?
Elizabeth Taylor
Hey-ey, what could you possibly get for the girl who has everything and nothing all at once?
I care less about Taylor’s knowledge of Aristotle and Shakespeare and much more about her care and respect for the famous women who got eaten up and spit out by the machinery of celebrity. When she pivoted from being every teen girl to being every famous bitch is when I really started to sit up and pay attention.
The Life of Showgirl
But that’s not what showgirls get
They leave us for dead
The way she ended this album with the closing of an Era's show? I applauded in my kitchen.
Father Figure
I can make deals with the devil because my dick’s bigger
Arya Stark out here keeping her list. Scott Borchetta
CANCELLED!
At least you know exactly who your friends are
They’re the ones with matching scars
That guitar riff. Whew. I hope the rumors that this is for Blake Lively are true. I liked those two together.
Ruin The Friendship
Should’ve kissed you anyway
Auntie Taylor has some advice now that she’s wrapped up in love.
Shoot your shot.
