So much emotion around the flooding and deaths as I remember such fond years of sleepaway camp and head to visit a sleepaway camp for our seven year old to attend next summer, so I’m leaning into outside of politics today. I grew up on 90’s country and must say I agree with Sarah on her Trisha Yearwood assessment. Sorry, Reba.
This is a cover, but Kenny Chesney’s live version of Loggins Messina’s “Please Come to Boston” sends chills down my spine every time. My husband has a wandering soul and I started falling in love with him after he quit his job and started traveling around South America. I’d listen to the refrain “she said, ‘hey rambling boy, why don’t you settle down?… please come home to me,” on repeat, hoping it might will him to come home. He did eventually come home :)
Thank you for the 90s country playlist. Lyrics from 90s country must occupy a large section of my brain because I knew the words to at least the chorus, if not the whole song, for every song on the playlist. ALL. FIVE. HOURS.
And yes, things cost money! Why is this a hard thing for people to understand? If you want good things in the community, you may have to pay more taxes. But because of a whole lot of stuff (greed, capitalism, individualism), we are sadly more concerned with our bank accounts than our communities.
Thanks for the overview of the Epstein case. B/c there are so many conspiracy theories attached to it, I’ve mostly avoided trying to understand the ins and outs. One question I’m left with: if there is not “client list” or evidence pointing to Epstein trafficking children, why is Ghislaine Maxwell in prison for 20 years? I’m confused how she could be convicted of trafficking without substantial evidence regarding the clients.
I didn’t grow up listening to country (love it now though!) but my husband certainly did and his favorite artist from the ‘90s is hands down Clint Black. I asked him specifically what his favorite song was growing up, and it was his “Put Yourself in My Shoes”. My personal Clint Black favorites now are “Like the Rain” or his duet “When I Said I Do” which was my husband and I’s first dance song at our wedding! ❤️
Can we get the forgotten bangers playlist? I’ve been having a throwback music summer and I’ve started to create a playlist for my 14 year old son to listen to.
I work for the Florida Department of Health in the Division of Emergency Preparedness and Community Support. Sadly, the state, following federal DOGE actions, has gutted the Bureau of Preparedness and Response within our division. These are the folks that are the first to deploy in disasters, both natural and man-made (they were on scene at the Pulse nightclub and other shootings). They started gutting that bureau going into hurricane season because many of those employees are funded by federal grants. So for the optics of financial efficiency, the state of Florida rejected federal money that was already coming in and cut jobs in one of our most crucial divisions for emergency preparedness at the start of the season in which the state is most vulnerable to emergencies and disasters.
Emergency preparedness is something that we only think about after a disaster because there's no way to quantify disasters that have been avoided or limited due to preparation. So we stay in this cycle of reaction instead of being proactive.
MEGAN! This is VERY CONCERNING!!!!!!!! Is there someone in Florida I can call about this? My county commissioner??? My mayor??? Anna Eskamani???? -Maggie
I loved the focus on 90’s country! I didn’t grow up with country music, and haven’t really listened to it much in decades, but I had a period in the 90’s when I was all in, and every song you mentioned was a favorite back then! Thanks for some happy memories
This episode reminded me that here in Chicago, we have local elections for the board of commissioners for the agency called the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago - this is responsible for making strategic plans around storm water and water treatment. So Chicago citizens do have a say here in this type of policy. I am curious how other places organize things, both politically and with regards to geography/ population density. https://www.mwrd.org
I’ve gotta say, there’s been some… tension… at work lately and after Outside of Politics, I just listened to Not Ready to Make Nice on repeat a few times and I think it really helped me.
In my city on the San Francisco Peninsula the City Council partnered with the bigger city next door to redo the wastewater treatment plant ( my water bill pays for it $300 per month) so that an earthquake won’t create sewage issues and we voted for a bond to raise our levy on the Bay due to sea water rise. I’m happy to do this
Also I’m going to push the definition of country into bluegrass to share this song (Hibriten Mountain by the Steep Canyon Rangers) that I love so much. To connect it to politics, the girl singing and fiddling is named Lizzie Hamilton (except she’s married now and I don’t know her married name and she’s a granddaughter of Jamie Clarke who was in Congress from NC in the late 80s (and who my mom rented a house from in college).
The lyrics are so relatable to me… “My daddy built a house lookin’ out across the fields, peekin’ through the hardwoods and the pines and the world seemed so small up among those Blue Ridge Mountains and I knew every hilltop by it’s name, and I knew every holler, every creek and every person, though I know it’ll never be the same…
And I moved off to the city with the boy that I loved, tryin’ just to make it on our own. But when I looked outside at night I couldn’t help but miss the sight of that moonlight on my family’s mountain home.”
I have quasi-plans to read the bill (which I can't call BBB because that means Better Business Bureau). I want to see for myself what's in there.
The 90s were such a good decade for women, in all music genres. I don't listen to country music really at all, but if I do, it was recorded in 1999 or earlier. Summer for me means punk rock.
I think you’re wrong but I’m listening re: A Good Hang.
I actually love the unstructured, meandering convos. All the bros get to do that and people eat it up….kelce brothers, joe Rogan, etc.
It truly feels like a casual dinner convo with the great Amy Poehler. I’m glad she doesn’t feel the need to perform!

Agree with the songs about broken marriages! You Don't Even Know Who I Am, Does He Love You? and so many more.

Are there one hit wonders that aren’t from the 90s?! Asking for a friend. #teamChad

(yes, Anna Eskamani IS my president ;))
I'll message you, Maggie.

I’m here to add to the summer time Country Music Playlist. “Watermelon Crawl” is probably the best summer country song of all time 🍉
