I'm personally missing the free time to network. I have a PhD. I work in academia. I attend conferences, but I don't get to attend my local industry events after work because I work full time and have a toddler. I'm in my 30s, and my commute to and from work is 30+ minutes each way. My life is full with family, but I'm also in the Junior League. It's incredibly hard to add one more thing to my calendar after work in addition to making sure I have time to play with my kid, exercise, cook a good meal, etc., all while my husband is working full time+. I think this is where my own blue collar background trickles in. My parents went to work and valued evenings and weekends as family time. I want that as well.
Job prospects aren't much better here in Canada either. I was laid off from my job back in October, and I still haven't found any work. My severance has run out, we're tight on everything... I have trouble sleeping at night from the stress of not finding anything in the customer service/finance field.
Aimee I am so sorry to hear this. I know what it feels like to have trouble sleeping at night because of this... I have experienced that myself with my family. My husband and I resonate with so much of this. After 30 years as a professional, he was laid off in 2024. He's applied to hundreds of positions across a wide range of jobs, but has rarely even gotten an interview. As you said, it's like his applications disappear into a hole, either an immediate rejection or no response at all. It's hard to see him so discouraged.
This is so hard, Sandy. I am really sorry. I find the use of AI in hiring to be so unethical. And, as you say, discouraging. What is your hubby's field?
Hi, Kim! I'm sorry I only just now found your comment and question. He has worked in multiple communications roles in Bible translation nonprofits, most recently as a project manager. But nonprofit PM doesn't translate easily into the public sector PM roles.
