I loved this episode! Definitely looking for the actions & not the outrage.

I’ve listened to this episode twice now. The word “Bold” is really speaking to me in a variety of areas in my life. Thinking of making it my word for 2025. Thank you for the inspiration and thank you for everything you do!!

I just came to say that I recently saw John Krasinski interview Stanley Tucci in person. I found him much more attractive in real life than on screen. Like magnetic. I’m not saying no if he comes my way. Though to be real he really does seem to like his wife (who sat two rows ahead of me.)

I’m not sure if this would be a better comment in the chat, but re: Beth’s comment on reviews, I’d love threads for recommendations in the chat. It’s so true that getting a recommendation from a real person is better than the million lists online or fake Amazon reviews. And we have spice cabinet members all over the world for recommendations about travel!

Minor corrections of the utmost importance: Mel Gibson was the first sexiest man alive. If Blake Shelton signals the beginning of the title being for sale, that was 7 years ago. John Legend was 5 years ago. Wikipedia is my friend.

When was Consumer Reports NOT a paid subscription?!

Beth, I want to say I'm here for you speaking your mind. Sarah, I'm here for you speaking your mind as well. I'm not here to agree with you. I'm here to hear a fresh perspective. I did notice that Beth held back on how she felt about Joe Biden, and I know that during spicy more to says, the both Beth and Sarah will often say "Please don't hate me but..." Indicating that you two get a lot of push back on things you have said. When I started listening to you, you emphasized having grace filled political conversations with those with whom you disagree. I have only a mild amount of success IRL with this, but I'm still working on it. I hope you are too, and I hope that you'll become more fearless in voicing your opinions in spite of Internet blowback, because I value your opinions a lot.

Re: Consumer Reports - some libraries offer free access to consumer reports online. I have to enter thru my library's online LinkCat system but then it's free.

I’m currently attending a research ethics conference with people from industry, government, research institutions, hospitals, etc. And the vibe is very much “We’re just going to have to see what happens.” Aside of occasional feelings of still being mad, I think I’m where Sarah and Beth are now.

I know everyone right now is thinking that John Cornyn might not confirm Matt Gatz, but his past actions say that he will absolutely get in line and do whatever Trump wants him to do. Texans do not put your hope in this man, he does not deserve it.

I have thinking about this since yesterday. It was the episode I needed. I appreciate Ms. Silvers enough is enough, show don’t tell, put up or shut up outlook. Ms. Stewart-Holland points are more challenging to me. I do not think she is wrong. The need for what’s politically effective even if the route there takes some strange turns.

I abandon now Ms. Stewart-Holland and go on with my own thoughts that were triggered by her comments. Again, she is not wrong and I don’t attempt to argue her takes, just my musings.

I might be one of those extreme idealists, but I am not a fan of that Machiavellian realpolitiks. What matters is the desired end. Effectiveness and expediency are more important than morals and ideals. Is that how this world works? I think so. Do I like it? Not a bit. I want the right ends by the right means. I don’t know if that’s possible. I don’t know if that’s 100% true in the way I live my life.

Anyone know who Sarah referenced in this episode that was a Democrat “Ron Manuel” or something like that? It was around the 36:20-36:30 time frame. I replayed it 3 times and tried googling people but no luck

https://www.axios.com/2024/11/15/rahm-emanuel-democrats-chair

Rahm Emanuel was a member of the House of Representatives, served in the Clinton Administration, was President Obama's chief of staff during the first two years of his Presidency, then he was Mayor of Chicago for a couple of terms, and is currently the US Ambassador to Japan.

His nickname is "Rahmbo" and once sent a pollster a dead fish in a box who was late delivering polling results. The character of Josh Lyman in the West Wing was allegedly based on him. Hope that helps!

Substack desperately needs an edit button. I am terrible about typing like I talk in my head and I need an edit button! Once I see comments with typos in there I think, well Jesus take the wheel, people will have to fill in the gaps LOL

Do you not have an Edit option in the elipsis (...) menu on the right side of the comment?

That feature only exists if you are using substack via internet browser. If using the app you only get "Share link to comment, Hide Comment, or Report" as options. :(

The political lesson of covid appears to be: don't be in power during a pandemic. And if you are, your response needs to be as minimal as possible because people prefer mass death to the smallest sacrifice or disruption. Also don't ever under any circumstance push a policy that might be inflationary, whether there's a pandemic or not.

Listen. Like Beth said, my husband is the hottest man alive to me, but y’all, right behind him is Glen freaking Powell. Hard agree with Sarah on this. Also, I feel compelled to share that I asked said husband out of the blue tonight, “Who is the sexiest man alive this year?” and he said without skipping a beat, “Glen Powell.” It’s a landslide. John Krasinski is great, but wth People

This was a good listen! More cussing Beth is great (and needed at this point)💯 I totally agree with no longer thinking or hoping people will do anything other than what they've shown- and what a fucking disappointment it has been when it comes to standing up to trump. Anyway. I liked the listen👏👏👏

I am wondering what Beth and Sarah think the Supreme Court justices should do. Lobby Congress? Work on campaigns? I am not really understanding. They are on the court, and they are in the minority. I am not sure how they can affect things in their role.

They needed to start calling the court's legitimacy into question a long time ago. We should not be beholden to the decisions of a bunch of dudes most of whom were appointed by a guy who was convicted of 34 felonies for cheating in the election that got them there, and two of whom committed sexual abuse. The court obviously doesn't care any more about precedent and only about using its power to achieve political ends. That's not a "Court." They needed to use what influence they had to say, "If the Court decides that women aren't full human beings, or that presidents have unlimited immunity from prosecution, that's a corrupt political decision that doesn't deserve your respect or obedience." Scathing descents and $1.50 will get you a coke in the machine down the hall.
