For the bird lovers frustrated by squirrels, I suggest "Those Darn Squirrles!" a picture by Adam Rubin.

My family became bird feeder enthusiasts while home in 2020, and found the Mark Rober Backyard Squirrel series on YouTube. (Those are still some of my daughter's favorite videos)

I hate to say this, but I think a lot of what is behind men getting away with sexual abuse of minors in a lot of scenarios is that they don’t actually think it is that wrong to have sex with a 15 year old as long as they did not physically force her to do it. I think many claim that they think it is wrong, but when it comes time to hold someone accountable they look at the girls and internally think “I’d do her” and feel sorry for the man being accused. Our culture of over sexualization of youth in females obviously plays into this.

In our house, we call that quest for relaxation after stress re-regulating. I love water but can’t always manage to get out to the river or lake as often as I need to regulate. 😅 So I swing. We have a porch swing and a camp hammock. Depending on the day, I will either swing on the porch or find some trees at the local park and gently swing while my boys play. It’s shockingly grounding, and I always feel regulated again afterwards.

Also Beth - I love that you remind yourself the land is the raccoons’ too. I feel the same way and love to see others be generous with animals. 💞

This was a great episode. It seems like you both keep coming back to non-dualistic thinking, both/and, in a lot of the bigger picture conversations lately, which we all meed more of. Thank you for this!

This episode was a rough listen for me. It’s going to take me some time to process how I move through the feelings I have about it. I appreciated Beth’s MTS on Epstein because I trust her research & I know that she is meticulous with her sources. I listen to PP to learn & grow as a person, a citizen, a friend, & a mother. This episode made me question the intention of it; was the intention to highlight differences or to demonstrate listening when we disagree or was it something else. I’m going to continue my contemplation & processing the feelings I experienced while listening.

No "deal" that ends with Russia being allowed to keep even a square inch of Ukraine's territory can be called a "peace agreement." Such a deal would in fact be an endorsement of war - an acknowledgement that a murderous dictator is allowed to invade a sovereign ally of the West and come out of the conflict ahead.

A couple of points that JVL at the Bulwark is fond of making:

Russia has kidnapped 20,000 Ukrainian children. Do you think Americans would ever accept peace with a country that kidnapped an equivalent 200,000 of our children? We wouldn't and we shouldn't. We would not rest until every single last perpetrator of that atrocity was dead. And it would be absurd, utterly ridiculous, for another country to expect us to do otherwise.

And any security guarantee that relies on the United States is a joke at this point, because the American voter has proven twice now to the world that he is too stupid and selfish and shortsighted and unsophisticated and unserious to vote against electing a cruel, crass idiot of a president who prefers allying with dictators. It can't be forgotten that Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in the 90s in exchange for security guarantees that the West ignored when Russia first invaded. That decision looks unbelievably foolish right about now and they would be even greater fools to trust us again.

I have been a listener for a really long time, and I had to turn it off at least for a little while in the middle of the Epstein conversation. I personally haven’t followed the story closely, so it’s not about the facts or opinions. I was just very, very shocked by Sarah’s tone and practically yelling into the mic. I have been a follower and listener and subscriber because I don’t want the talk radio screaming into the mic vibe. Beth even seemed to be using a softer, gentler tone to calm the situation. It was upsetting and felt cynical and overly angry.

Squirrel deterrent expert here, after years and years of battling them in my yard. Texas squirrels (and I have learned squirrels can have different tastes in different areas) do not like safflower. So simply switching to safflower should work. The only problem with that is if you have goldfinches they also don’t seem to like safflower. Most of the other birds in my yard like it just as much as anything else. 6 feet from tree/fence should be enough. Baffles are still helpful - even if they won’t eat the seed they will still occasionally check it out and make a mess of it if they can get to it. I put peanuts out for my squirrels. I’m not sure if I actually recommend this, but it does seem to satisfy them enough to calm them down a bit on the birdseed, vegetable garden, and fig tree. My neighborhood is an oak tree Mecca, so the squirrels are not going away. After literally chasing them out of my fig tree with a broom for a couple of years, I finally decided I had to make peace with them. This time of year (and spring) I also find my oldest outdoor pillow and make a little cut it in, make it easily accessible to them, and cross my fingers that they will pull the stuffing out of it for their nest and NOT select one of my newer pillows to destroy. It’s a constant battle, but I just try to laugh and say oh, well.

I also enter a flow state while I’m traveling, Sarah! There’s nothing better to me than exploring new places and having to figure out how to get from place to place. And as a fellow Enneagram 1, I cannot fully relax at home. I’m trying to figure out something I can do more conveniently and cheaply that will provide the same feeling. My husband has music and video games, which he can do basically any time. I love to read, but nothing gives me that sense of flow like being somewhere new.

As an Enneagram 1, I find cleaning and organizing small spaces while listening to a podcast or book calming (think car, one closet, pantry). Like I can at least control this one space, if not others in my life :) I also get in a zone when cooking. But I agree that to truly relax I need to be away and my husband does not understand this at all! My mind is just always thinking of ways things can be better / things to do at home.

Beth water actually does make humans calm! Specifically, putting your face in water resets your vagus nerve (which can also be reset by the alternate nose breathing Sarah was describing) due to our mammalian diving reflex causing our heart rate to slow & therefore we we feel calmer.

I have heard a parenting trick: "if you have a crab, put it in water." If you kids are grumpy get them in a pool or bath or something.

Ugh the squirrels! I have seen them Olympic level launching themselves off our deck and landing on the feeder. Twice they have knocked down the entire bird feeder.
